Residencies at Headwaters

Residencies are open to writers and visual artists of any experience level who are seeking dedicated time to deepen connection with self, land, and work. We warmly welcome women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ artists and writers to apply.

For summer 2024, Headwaters is offering three types of residencies.

  • Solo Residency – Have the space all to yourself, allowing for deep immersion in your work. Offered on a sliding scale from $1600-1900.*
  • Collaborative Residency – Come share the space with your favorite creative partner. You need not be working on the same project, but you both must apply separately and identify each other in the fields below. Each artist will have private bedrooms and bathrooms. The kitchen, living room, and studio space will be shared. Offered on a sliding scale from $1800-2100* split two ways.
  • Shared Residency – Share the space with another artist or writer you haven’t met yet. Shared Residencies are mixed gender. Each artist will have private bedrooms and bathrooms. The kitchen, living room, and studio space will be shared. Offered on a sliding scale from $900-1200* per artist. If no other artist requests a shared residency at the same time, you may be offered a Solo Residency spot at the Solo Residency rate.

*Priority is not given based on how much an artist can pay. We try to accommodate all artists who can demonstrate a purpose for their time in residence.

*If you are applying for a collaborative residency, each artist or writer will need to fill out a separate application.

How to Apply

For this season, we are opening the space to writers and artists of all experience levels who can demonstrate a clear purpose for seeking a residency. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and will be accepted first come first-served basis until March 27 or until all residencies are filled.

Included in your application, please provide the following:

  • Letter of Intent – Tell us who you are and what you’re working on! Tell us about the creative inquiries that haunt you, the pages you’ll tape up to the walls of the studio, the seedling of an idea you hope to nourish on your hikes in the woods, the project you need obsessive shut-in time to complete, and everything in between. We want to know how you’ll use your time!
  • Sample of Work – 1-2 sample(s) of fiction or non-fiction up to 5000 words; 3-5 poems; or 3-5 images of visual art
  • Resume or CV
